Hi zrx, Looks like a nicely layed out tank, if you are going for hillstream loaches I'll throughly recomend Pseudogastromyzon cheni but then that's just because i keep them and they are the only ones i know much about ;-) It is a delight to watch cheni, they are always entertaining, lots of power pl...

That is one fat cheni. Mine have never looked that fat at spawning. As i mentioned this is excessive, we are used to seeing both of our breeding cheni with lumps in this area but normally they are much smaller and last only a day or two. Definitely in this case it is not a pretty sight. I would say...

Thanks for that image Chris, I have to give respect to your aquascaping for doing such a good job of hiding all that :-)

Hi Chris,
That is one very nice looking tank, do you have a manifold system in there to create unidirectional flow? I think i can see a couple of powerheads in there but can't tell how they are linked up :)

Still cheking the filter?

Hi Emma,

I'm just being curious, have you checked your filters again? It would be very interesting to get an idea of how frequently swellias spawn and compare this to other hillstream loaches.

Gravid Cheni

Hi All, At the British LOL meet the subject of gravid hillstream loaches was raised and if they has been seen. As if on cue one of our females did a photo shoot demonstrating just this situation. Time to meet our model: http://loachtank.org/albums/userpics/10107/normal_DSCN2492.JPG This loach was on...

It's a shame Google shrinks the video, the full resolution clip shows a lot more detail. There is a particularly nice little wiggle that Marge does with her front fins about 50 seconds into the video but my favourite bit is just at the end where she squeezes through the gap between the pieces of woo...

Video update

I have uploaded my Marge clip to google:

That should be a lot faster for everyone to download although the quality may not be so good...

Marge video star

Hi all, Well it was a very long drive home for Susan and myself, lots of traffic but we made in it the end :-) I would like to say thank you to Emma and Steve for their hospitality, it was second to none! I think that Martin's comments on the store are spot on, certainly we have not seen one better!...

Surface area

Hi Emma, If anything a wide body could be more of a problem in this case. Hillstream loaches are designed to face the current nose on, the are not designed to swim back first against the current. In the worst case one of these guys will come to rest on the intake with their body flat to the current,...

I managed to get a 45 second video clip of one of these little loaches moving about, but am not sure how I go about posting it. I registered with the google free video upload, but it got half way through uploading and then it crashed. Any ideas on if I'm doing this right, or where else I can try to...

Power tools, whir whir, wizz, wizz......a long length of hose, hooked up to a powerhead.....could work. It could indeed, i have always had too much back pressure on the powerhead to get any of my previous contraptions to work. Now that I have a good length of kink resistant 3/4" heavy duty hose it ...

Steaming!

I can sympathise all too well Martin. It was noticeable that our fish were bothered once the temperature got that high in the tank. Thankfully we have had a break in the heat here in the UK, the outside temperature is down to a much cooler 22 centigrade today. Yesterday has been the first day in a l...

Re: Free fish!

I might just take you up on that offer LES, I'll PM you later today. It would be a pleasure to see them go to another hillstream fan :-) I think if we give them another month or so we will have a nice selection at just over an inch long. I would prefer to let them get to a sensible size before re-h...

Hi Aminah, I can't really make any definitive statements on the correct ratios with Cheni, all i can do is provide a little information regarding my experiences. We have 5 (adult) cheni, we suspect that there are 3 males and 2 females but are not completely sure ;-) They have been breeding happily f...
