Re: Dojo loaches

75 F is in winter far too hot for Misgurnis. 10 C, or 52 F might be much better in winter. In summer around 20 C, 70 to 75 F, is OK, but only for max 2 months

Re: Best quarantine practices for new loaches

Once I swapped half a tank with fishes from a friend. My fishes were health, his were healthy too. The swap was a swap indeed: his fishes were placed in the same tank as mine came from, and he did the same. The tanks were unchanged for months But a week later, my Original fishes and his Original fis...

Re: Best quarantine practices for new loaches

I would never treat fishes which seam to be healthy with medicines. Quarantine, yes - fishes cvan be ill. But if they are not, antibiotics could a) harm the fishes and b) help the bacteria learing how to deal with them. If they do, you'll be the first victim. That's another rule I have: I never go i...

Re: 16 inch Clown Loach

For years I noted both: 10 (12) cm would mean sl = 10 cm; tl = 12 cm. But this was just my way of coding it. Nos I don't care that much anymore about lenth

Re: 16 inch Clown Loach

I have made similar errors in the past, being certain a fgish is, say 20 cm, and then it died. Measuring a dead fish is not hard, so this is rather correct, and the fish turned out to be 17 cm Fisherman´s tales is one explanation, problems with estimating the length of a fish is another. Although, 4...

Re: light patches on weather loach

It looks like a fungus. Fungi are rather sensitive towards alt in the water, but I can´t tell how sensitive weather loaches are to salt

Re: unknown bugs

I would think Asellus aquaticus, for which Wikipedia has the following Engils names waterlouse, aquatic sowbug and water hoglouse. Looking further, it does seam to be harmless, and good food for fish. Obviously, being Dutch, that is not native in English, I started with the Dutch name - and than Wik...

Re: aquarium chillers

putting the pot of a filter in a fridge will do the chilling for you Assuming you already got a filter, you will onoly need a fridge. As this fridge will be drilled (drill the door, else you might harm things best left as they are) you might want to find a dedicated fridge. Which might be needed onl...

Re: plants rooting

I had hoped to get a reply such as "I did so and so, and it took me 2 weeks". But unfortunately, that did not happen In order to help others, I changed the position of a few pieces of wood, and could not help myself, I had to pull a leaf gently. Much to my surprize, the plant had already rooted. Try...

plants rooting

Last Sunday, I planted a tank with Cryptocoryne wendti, the green variety. This tank is meant for Ambastaia sidthimunki - small, but quite active. Decoration is further a lot of wood. Now I wonder, how long will these plants need to rood enough so I can add the fishes? Material is old, so I don't fe...

Re: Keeping a solo Skunk Loach?

I did have them once, very, very long ago. A group of 7, in a 60 * 30 cm tank. This was too small, but I was 14 then. Y mortleti is a fish which needs lots of hiding places, they keep a small teritorium (you probably know this), but I would not keep them alone because they keep a territorium. Just a...

Re: Panting Loach

Gills can - I think - be hurt and they might cure badly. But I think whatever happened 4,5 months back will not be the reason: I get the idea the panting is something recently. Or was it panting for 4.5 month now? Lowering the temperature will most likely be a good idea. Because colder water can con...

Re: Are Ambastaia sidthimunki scaleless?

A sidheymunkey are in the Botinidae family, that is, they are Botids

Now the phrase scaleless is most often used for catfish, which loaches are definitely not.

What do you need this for? For medication? or for other purposes
