We're a small country, my town certainly doesn't have a local aquarium. The only one that would probably deal with vets is in Auckland.. miles away from me. I will be visiting this aquarium, but not until August... Do a search here: http://www.aquavetmed.info/ Obviously, not all vets have registere...

I feel that keeping loaches isn't something one should do without UV and kanamycin/TMP sulfa on hand. If I lived in countries where those antibiotics weren't readily available, I wouldn't keep loaches. Ich and cachexia are very common killers of loaches. You might want to try to track down the vets ...

It's most like not worms or other parasites but the ubiquitous mycobacteria. People often think that it must be (to the detriment of their fish) because lay people can't wrap their heads around the idea that one can waste away for reasons other than starvation (due to parasites or not being fed enou...

A heater controller won't help when a heater dies and no longer produces heat (unless it has an alarm). That's exactly what happened to me last week. How many watts per gallon did you have that one heater cooked your fish (presumably during the winter)? I have two heaters in both of my larger tanks ...

Loaches don't mix well with crabs, crayfish, etc. Even though they're faster, they often sit on the bottom because they don't have swimbladders that allow them to float effortlessly in mid-water. They also sleep on the bottom. A 30 min acclimation probably is too short. It takes me several hours to ...

Yes, I do water changes everyday and try to remove almost all the water. For me, that requires turning off the heater until the new water raises the water level above the heater. Since it's like a 90% water change, I always add the new water back in slowly by trickling it from a bucket through some ...

I got my neomycin today and weighed out a few samples. I'd start with 0.57 g/5 gal. A level 1 mL (1/4 teaspoon) weighed in at 0.56 g so that's what I would dose daily following a water change. Note that I use a 5 gal hospital tank and my water changes entail draining all but the last inch of water f...

I also use airline tubing but start the siphon with a syringe and use one of these valves to control the drip rate: http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/images/products/tubing/400/44560p.jpg At least for freshwater fish, temperature is by far the least important parameter. Ironically, it's the only thin...
