Hi Jerry, Our tank has a lot of hiding places - I certainly wouldn't deprive your Clown loaches of something similar. I think that your Clowns (and your brothers) need longer to fully settle in and get themselves more familiar with their surroundings, and with each other. Don't forget that larger fi...

Hi astron6, and welcome to Loaches Online! :D Do you have any other fish species in the new Clown loach tank? As Shari says, they are nocturnal, so it is not unusual for them to hide away during the day. Younger fish can sometimes be enticed out a bit more during the day with 'dither fish', such as ...

8) Cheers Graeme, I had missed that thread somewhere along the lines - very interesting indeed. I have eight S. balteata at home, and as I said earlier, some have bars, and now some don't. I think I will have to sepnd some time looking for those puff cheeks to see if I can notice a difference. I hav...

Hi lunasmile, What foods have you tried feeding your Golden Nugget on? And what time of day do you feed? If you haven't tried it already, add some food after lights out, as being nocturnal he'll be more inclined to come out and find some. They do like eating cucumber and courgette, so you could try ...

Interesting! My Schistura balteata all had their few central vertical bands when in the stock tank at work (lots of hiding places so they weren't stressed), and once acclimatised to the River Tank some gradually lost the bands. I now have a mixture of some with bands and some without. All doing well...

Hi Richard, Welcome to Loaches Online! You'll be pleased to know that your Clowns will not do any significant damage to the sealant on your aquarium. They are most likely just being inquisitive and searching for small particles of food that may have been missed. Mine do this from time to time, but i...

Finally, it is very possible that loach classification is incomplete/messed up in a number of other places. One example: do we know beyond any doubt that Yoyos/Polkadots/Histrionica are really three species? In 2004 fish ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat had a paper published by Zootaxa, which describ...

Hi Glostik, Sorry to hear about the problems with your loach. You'll probably need to answer a few questions to help with a diagnosis. What are the water parameters of the main tank that he was in? Is he a new addition to the tank? Any other fish affected? A guess would be some sort of bacterial inf...
