Absolutely lovely setup! I especially like the picture of the underside of the frog through the glass. Excellent stuff!

Loaches in general (and yoyos in particular) can be kind of boisterous. My only worry is that they might irritate the knife and it would retaliate. I've no experience of them though so if you don't think it's likely to do that then I don't see a problem.

I wouldn't even put chain loaches in a tank that size, although I was guilty of worse when I first started fishkeeping. I think kuhli loaches would be a good choice.

Not enough photos get posted on the forums. I don't think there's any way for users to delete their threads but you shouldn't anyway.

Hard to say at that age with the yoyos. If one is noticeably more plump then that's a good sign it's a female.

Thanks all. She uses a Canon 500D and a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 L IS USM macro lens. We'll try cleaning the glass a bit better next and then maybe try out a tripod. Got some loach pictures to come eventually. If anyone has any hints, tips, bit of experience to share etc, please head over to this thread...

Just a small point - loaches aren't actually scaleless, they just have very tiny scales.

First forays into fish photography

Here are just a few of the pictures Nichola has taken of our fish recently. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n38/palaeodave/5024010082_668747e373_b.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n38/palaeodave/5023401983_d6fb3ab5a8_b.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n38/palaeodave/5024011084_ebfbbe8...

I suppose up to ten of either but not of both (or five of each). You could perhaps add a third yoyo. They would get on just fine.

I don't know about ich. I've never had to deal with it.

I had a group of 5 in a ~47 US gallon tank and rapidly became of the opinion that it wasn't a big enough tank for yoyos. They're in a 79 US gallon tank now and that seems much more sensible. In a 40 gallon I'd go for Botia striata or Yasuhikotakia sidthimunki.

I'd have thought the water in Northern Ireland is fairly hard and alkaline (correct me if I'm wrong), so thin shells probably means they just aren't getting enough to eat. Cucumber and courgette go down well with mine and they'll also clean up any algae wafers they come across.

They'd be fine. Histies are the most placid of the botiine loaches that I've seen. Honestly, the dwarf gourami are going to be more of a problem to the loaches if you get a male in breeding season. I'd personally recommend against that particular species of gourami. I know they're nice and colourful...
