Hi tripwater, I'm in atlanta too :) It's a hunt to try to find kuhlis in atlanta. I've found them at Petco in Buckhead, Petsmart in Edgewood, Pets Unlimited in Smyrna, and, most recently, Fish Store & More in it's new Roswell location. Fish Store & More had them in for their grand reopening a couple...

I just moved my six kuhlis from a 20gallon to 40. They were always one of my favorite fish, but now I can't stop watching them! I think the differences, aside from the added space, is that there's more to 'do' in the new tank. I got driftwood with lots of little cracks and crevices and tunnels, and ...

I find most fish are more fun to watch in bigger groups and with fewer species, so that's what I'd recommend. Other people might have different experiences, but what I've noticed is, even with compatible species, that they just don't interact with each other as much as they do amongst their own kind...

I got my first tank in exactly the same way - from a friend, with fish, and with no instructions. It gets better, I promise! One thing I wish I'd known right away is that you're not supposed to completely clean the filter (it was gross when I got it, so I threw it out and started fresh). The filter ...

I have some very nice black sand that came with a tank I bought off of craigslist. The lady didn't know what it was, just that she'd got it at the petstore. I think it was black estes sand . Not sure how much it cost, but you might check around and see - it's got to be cheaper than tahitian moon san...

I added a couple of pangios yesterday. I brought over a mature filter, plus I've had the cannister running for several weeks with plants, snails, shrimp, etc. I'm getting a small nitrate reading, so I think things are on track. I'm spreading out the moving of the pangios because I'm nervous about it...

I'm really happy with my pool filter sand so far. It's not pure white, but it's pretty close (closer than I'd like, actually). I remember reading on here that the actual color varies region to region. I bought it at Home Depot - ~$5 for a 50lb bag. I had heard the colorquartz sand kind of sticks tog...

Ok, horseface loaches are out then :( Another time, another tank! I'll have to have a think about what to do with my CPDs. I don't do anything different to the tank they're in - i.e. it's the same soft neutral water, but I do try to keep it a few degrees cooler. That alone might be a good enough rea...

stocking help - 40 breeder with pangios
I posted earlier about the progress on my new pangio tank , Now I need stocking help! It's a 40 Breeder - 36" long, 18" deep, 16" high Pangios obviously. I have six of various species, including one Myersi who just hit a growth spurt. I'd like to add more, but how many? Dithers: I definitely want so...

Manzanita is hard to find marketed for aquariums (at least around here - probably more common out west), but it's all over the place as parrot perches. Weird that it hasn't become more widespread. I did end up finding these pieces at a LFS, but http://manzanita.com/ is supposed to be good. Not sure ...

I like that idea, Emma! It seems so obvious when you say it  As for the kitchen, give us time! We've only been at this a few years, and we have way fewer tanks than you two! Thanks again everyone for your compliments. Even if it doesn't turn out quite like I envision, I've been learning a lot ...

You could also talk to some of the people at the Raleigh Aquarium Society , or the Charlotte Area Aquarists Society . They have members all over the state (and many of them even travel down to Atlanta for our activities!) I've found that local clubs are the cheapest way to find new tanks, equipment,...

Thanks, everyone! mickthefish, I absolutely love criticism, and I think you're right in your assessment. I'm just not sure how to make it look more natural - any ideas? Honestly, I wasn't going for a biotope look with this one, because it didn't seem possible, and I wanted to try something different...
