Guys that fatty deposit thing is only used by the authors to separate S. atropurpureus from the other species discussed in the paper i.e. S. imperiorientis and S. percnopterygionus . From what I can gather S. atropurpureus and S. semoni are very closely related though (the fin ray counts are basical...

There's also speculation that vulcanus and reticulatus might turn out to warrant their own genus though I'm unsure of the reasons. Maybe the scaling is one of them?

Cobitis paludica

Specimens photographed at the Rio de la Vega, Tarifa, Spain. The other fish in the pictures is the endemic killifish Aphanius baeticus .
