From what I understand, goldfish will change color over time. I know comets that start orange can go black and gold and on to white as they age. Not sure about the fantails, but I'd wonder if it couldn't apply to them as well. best wait for more input, but I'd think in absence of other sickly sympto...

true they won't (usually) eat your guppies but they may eat their babies-if they can catch them. Not true they won't eat ramshorn snails - most botia loaches will try. at the very least they will harass them to the point the snails won't be able to open their shells to eat. they'll nip at their feel...

that's about 23 gallons?
I would have suggested a dojo loach, but that's too small for them.
