The TDS meters we use in aquaria are really just conductivity meters. They only measure things that are conductive in the water column. Things such as sugars, suspended solids, and sediment, won't register on a TDS meter. Yeah, I figure I need to pick one up. However, why won't a simple hydrometer ...

Keeping track of the nitrate levels can tell you how often to do water changes. You should keep the nitrates under 20ppm if at all possible. For lightly stocked tanks this may well be 25% or so once a week. For more heavily stocked tanks this might be 50% once a week, or several smaller changes eac...

Re: is there a decent heater out there?

Ashleigh, how are the fish doing? Heaters.......... grrrrrrrrr I have just put a new one in my tank and it seems impossible to get it settled down to a particular setting. Leads me to ask, does anyone out there make a decent heater? I don't think in all my years of fishkeeping I've ever bought the ...

I just added one to each of my tanks two days ago, one of which has clown loaches. So far so good. The Bristlenose is really shy and only does his chores at night. I've seen frank's aquarium mentioned by folks on here. http://www.franksaquarium.com is the URL. I am going to try it out as soon as they get yo-yo loaches in stock.

My Java Fern is OK. I recently found out Java Fern prefers to grow on wood rather than in the substrate. Is anyone else aware of this? It is mentioned in Peter Hiscock's Encyclopedia of Aquarium Plants http://www.amazon.com/Encyclopedia-Aquarium-Plants-Peter-Hiscock/dp/0764155210/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8...
