Re: Tell me about Fluval Canisters- or Canisters in general

Make sure you pay attention to surface flow and aeration. Canister filters are great for maintaining a biological filtration and for planted tanks, but you can mount them in ways that do not allow for very good surface movement or aeration. If your plan is to replace hang on the back filters, keep t...

Re: fat fish in aquaria

I watched an alligator gar eat swan feathers on day... :D Dumb fish... Most animals in nature have a seasonal diet. Even the predators that primarily eat one or two prey end up with gut loadings that vary. Much of the fish meal is just ground up everything leftover from filleting the meat off of wil...

Re: fat fish in aquaria

As long as their bodies do not look emaciated, you are probably doing fine. Honestly, what I've seen at that the hungier the fish get, the more agressively they feed. So it helps regulate. Plus just like us, the less work they do the lower their need for calories. Fish in the wild typically have str...

Re: Metronidazole Advice?

Metro plus prazi is usually a good one/two punch combo.

Do you have info where prazi needs to be injested? We usually dose the water and have positive results with the prazi bath.

Re: River-Tank manifold

Another option over sponges, Any pool supply shop will sell filter spargers. They are basically a piece of plastic with many numerous small slits/holes cut into it. The holes are small enough that any larger particles will not get in where they can damage powerhead impellers. And there are enough ho...

Re: i have found a snail in my tank can someone help me ?

I do the driftwood/snail tank thing.

Have a tank set aside for snails. Every so long, switch out a piece of driftwood in the snail tank for one in the loach tank. The loaches go on the hunt. The downside is your filter intakes will fill with shells.

Re: advise on wet/dry trickle filter

Considering your situation, a wet/dry might be your best option. Some of the plants you mentioned should do OK without heavy CO2, provided you keep the light low and balance things in favor of slow growth.

Re: advise on wet/dry trickle filter

A standard wet dry would probably drop to much CO2 if you are injecting it.

Why not go with a canister filter running in the same flow pattern?

Re: Wet-dry filter and aquaponics? Filtration for a 60gal

Most of the concern with wet/dry filters and high nitrates are in terms of saltwater aquariua and invert systems. For those systems, a normal biological aerobic filtration system is a concern. The use of live rock, deep sand beds, and mechanically removing waste through filter socks and protein skim...

Different colored markers on the glass under the bulb/tube works too. Standard black sharpie does pretty well, and you can reverse it easily with some alcohol or window cleaner.

Re: Dilemma with my CL and 30G tank

Just a couple things. First off, in my opinion, fish keeping isn't about the fish, as much as it is about maintaining a healthy environment for the animals first, and dealing with the fish second. Keeping water conditions as good as possible is the goal. This means more water changes will likely be ...

Re: I want to know about your lighting set ups!

With lots of lighting, CO2 is needed. A pleco wouldn't be able to keep up with the algae growth, and it could/would suffocate the plants.

Re: Death of Two Loaches

Your bio filter should be fine. But you can rapidly increase loading by killing off a bunch of the other bacteria in the tank, while adding a stress to your existing bio filter. Watching for ionized ammonia and nitrite build up and extra food in the tank is good practice as you really don't know how...

Re: I want to know about your lighting set ups!

When you step up your overall lighting for more plant growth, the higher plants have an increased CO2 demand. If you starve them for CO2, you'll end up with an effecient algae reactor. This is where the balance between plant nutrients comes into play with lighting and CO2. Then you have to adjust yo...

If you are using multiple antibiotics on your tank, keep an eye on nitrite and ammonia numbers.
