ChefKeith
I like your chart too. I'll be glad to check the details. I have been wanting to do that, but have not had time yet. I'll be out of town for a few days, so I'll try to get to it late next week.

I worked out the calculations for how different types of water changes compare to each other. I gave just a couple of example figures earlier, but had not taken into account any input pollution. I have now added this more realistic assumption. I have assumed that the tank pollution has stabilized. T...

Thanks Emma and Helen. I rather like your methods. A continuous drip method has the advantage that it just happens after it is all set up. But things can go wrong. The overflow can fail. Even with a backup float to shut it down, the backup could fail. If the electricity goes off, you have to be sure...

ChefKeith- Thanks for the link. It has some good ideas. chris1932- My tank is 75g (it had been set up for 11 years, but now I am starting over). I am still looking at R.O. filters but was thinking of getting one that produces 100 gpd. I want to get this tank set up to use the R.O. water, but also wi...

Excellent links ChefKeith. Thank you. I especially like the DIY version. With these types of switches it should not be too hard to design a good system. You got me thinking about continuous feed water change systems. So here is a completely different plan that has the advantage of getting rid of the...

R.O. and water changes
I am going to use R.O. water for all water changes in order to get soft water since the local water here is very hard. I'm looking for information on the best way to make this work efficiently and to be at least partially automated. I am considering having a sump and a separate storage tank of the s...

ChefKeith, Ok, so the input pollution is not taken into account. Then for example, if we do 50% water changes every day then half of the pollution is removed each day. So after the first day we have half the original pollution and after the second day we have half again as much or 1/4 the pollution....

ChefKeith- Would you explain what assumptions you used to estimate the pollution level plateau's. Unless I am not understanding it, it would seem that you have to make an assumption about the rate of pollution input which would be based on the amount of fish waste products. What do you use for this ...

As a new member I just want to say hello. I have been lurking for a couple months and have really enjoyed getting to know everyone here. I have kept fish for 26 years with a 75g for the last 11 years. I stocked tetras and a beautiful pair of green severums that spawned many times and recently died a...
