They make fake driftwood decorations. I also use natural background on my tanks and never clean the back glass :wink:.

Sudden temperature change is not the only thing that can shock a fish. The difference in water chemistries can have the same effect. most catfish in general prefer floorspace over height. For clowns, I would say a minimum of 1.5' width.

loaches will often "grey" out when stressed or fighting. I would give them a few days to calm down and get back to normal.

i have had luck with visitherm and ebo-jager heaters. When i worked for the lfs, I had several cases of penn-plax's cooking tanks. Sorry for your loss.

i think im going to put 89 gallons worth of fish in my 90 gallong tank. The one gallon of water serves as lubrication to help them move around :roll:

If you have an adequate heater, it shouldn't matter whether the air conditioning hits the tank or not. Unfortunately, while some bacteria do live in the gravel, most will be found in the filter or other porous materials. It looks like you went way too fast in adding fish. It usually takes 4-6 weeks ...

I had this happen to me when i made the mistake of using a log i found outside instead of driftwood. That sliminess doesn't go away. I would take them out. You could try boiling them, but it didn't help when i tried to make my own :wink:.
