Re: Ideas for a new setup

Thanks Diana, I've decided not to glue any rocks or polystyrene together and your experience has confirmed it for me. The egg crate looks useful but I'm still thinking of some way of sealing stones to the aquarium base. The main reason is so that no dirt can accumulate under them and I can use the f...

Re: Ideas for a new setup

Thanks for your thoughts Bas Pels,
The piece of wood was to be at the very top of the stones whether I incorporated polystyrene or not.
Why do you place polystyrene on the bottom of the tank? Is that to protect the glass from when you place stones in there?

Ideas for a new setup

Hello, I've been planning a new set up for my aquarium and have been wondering what is realistic or not. One thing, is polystyrene safe in a tank? I was planning on making a stack of stones but thought all stones would maybe be too heavy and that polystyrene at the top would make the design lighter....

[quote= At one time, I had comet and shubunkin goldfish in there, but have since rehomed them. They really didn't bother the dojos, either.[/quote]

I had to move my weather fish from my old goldfish tank after they started biting the beautiful long tail of my comet.

Re: Tankmates for Weather Loaches

They are sociable fish so another of his species would be appreciated. I've kept them with white cloud mountain minnows, zebra and leopard spot danios. And now with Alabama rainbow shiners (Don't put shiners with smaller minnows though). Java ferns and Anubias plants are great because they can be ti...

Re: I don't know what to do!?

Hello Eli, Until someone more able to help arrives... It shouldn't be too difficult to know whether your fish have white spot or not. Have a look at these pics to see if you recognise the disease; https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ich+fish&safe=off&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=ArmCUv77OMmrhQf1l4GYBQ...

Re: Pellet vs Flake food for goldfish

Thank you! I was afraid they would be gulping air too much, when going for the flakes, resulting in bloating, etc.! Well, I'm not sure about that... I mean if there are some health risks. You could always make it sink by pouring the flakes in with a cup of water? They do like some variation in diet...

Re: Pellet vs Flake food for goldfish

I always found flake better with goldfish. It is easier to monitor how much they eat in a certain time. They eat happily from the surface and from the bottom so a mix up now and then is a good idea, in the wild they regularly take insects stuck on the surface. Many people feed them a flake and pelle...

Re: Rhinogobius with shrimps?

Which sp. of rhino are you looking? Rhinogobius duospilus or whatever is available. For example someone is selling them online but I'd also check a couple of my local shops too. But sellers rarely or never seem to state the exact species of fish like this. But I've more or less shelved the idea of ...

Thanks. I have good hiding which I assume is one of the reasons how they survive when tiny at the moment. But certainly don't want my larger shrimps being eaten up too.

Rhinogobius with shrimps?

I've developed a desire to introduce some Rhinogobius fish into my aquarium. However, I read somewhere that they eat shrimps. As I have a growing population of cherry shrimps in my tank I don't want to introduce a fish that will destroy them. The shrimps breed in the tank with the fish I have; white...

Re: Some Shrimps Photos to Share

By the way, I bought 15 cherry shrimps and they settled nicely into my aquarium. After I put in my heater and rose the temperature I found they had bred and many of the young survived even though I have fish in the tank. I now have 30 or 40. Later I took out the heater yet still seem to find a coupl...

Re: the trip to collect Pseudogastromyzon fasciatus

Thank you for uploading those photos, really useful to see these fish in their natural habitat.
Also I noticed how the brook is very low it being summer. I've read how their native brooks change enormously with the change of season.

The nose isn't cropped exactly. On my browser if I right click I get an option which says "view image". This opens the picture out properly.

Re: Aid Water Quality?

Acorus gramineus could be considered too. My local garden centre sells them rather cheaply, so you could check your one.

Also Anubias grows both under water (of course) but also is happy with its leaves above water.
