Well, at least mine are trying to.

After watching this for a few times I decided I had to share with you. I mischievously placed some food on the glas bar at the top of my tank and, well, see what happens:

Only the kubotai are brave enough to pull this off.
Next step in loach evolution or just incredibly greedy? Discuss. :mrgreen:

Wow, that's incredible.

With the lack of hesitation and the skill involved it wouldn't be surprising if this is some technique they use in nature to obtain hard-to-reach food. Thanks for the great video!

Rather good. I'm guessing this is an adaptation that suits moving from one pool to another, should the challenge arise. On page 44 of the Loach book, you can see a B. histrionica (shot by Ken Childs) making a break for it, out of the photo tank.

But this video is important, and I think it should be archived on the species index. Those pectoral fins are good for more than just steering!

Thanks for sharing this. If you don't mind, I'd really like to add a link to your video on the species index. Meanwhile, you better get some sort of netting over your tank...

I have long observed B. kubotai utilize such use of their bodies and pectoral fins. They dug undergravel tunnels in my aquarium and are excellent leapers!

You can now actually recognize the food (small greyish crumbs) .. watch the last loach taking a walk closely and you can see (and hear!) it getting one of the food pellets!

I love it!

My yoyos and rostrata used to do this same thing on the lily pads in my aquarium because the food would float over the top once they disturbed the leaf enough to get water on it. I never thought of it as significant enough to mention, though, because they just always did it. I should change my attitude about things like that, I guess, so I can share the cuteness!

Good for you for posting the vid! I'm glad you decided to.
