kuhli loaches body width

Post by ali12345 » Sun Aug 24, 2008 12:31 pm

Hi,
I have the striped kuhli loaches, black kuhli loaches and pangio anguilaris. I was wondering about the width and height their bodies get to. The black loaches are thick set but the others are much slimmer. Will they bulk up at all as they mature. They have reached almost their expected length.

Kuhlies are not all the same diameter, but I am not sure which are shorter/fatter vs longer/thinner. Have a look at the species profiles, and near the bottom are 'more pics' so you can see if yours are similar.

Happy fish keeping!

Hi,
thanks for replying.
I have looked at the pictures but it is difficult to tell scale in many of them.

I have two Pangio Myersi and two Pangio Kuhli's.

My Pangio Myersi have become stockier as they have matured.
My pangio khuli's are more streamlined and slimmer, but they did become proportionately stockier as they matured.
Now at approximately 1 - 4 years old respectively, my Myers Kuhli's are visually thicker then my Pangio Kuhlies.
I have learned that tank size appears to play a part in kuhli development, so mine are not at full length. They range from 1.75" to 2.00" (4.375 cm to 5 cm) in length.

I hope this helps a bit.

Mike

Hi Alison,

Pangio anguillaris and P. doriae are both very slender bodied fish which do not show the same sort of typical girth seen in other Pangio species. Gravid females will appear more plump, but still not usually quite as chunky as other Pangio species which are not gravid.

In the scientific paper "A Review of the Eel-loaches of the Genus Pangio (Teleostei: Cobitidae) from the Malay Peninsula, with descriptions of six new species" by Kottelat and Lim, their body length vs height are discussed as follows:

Pangio anguillaris is described as having a standard body length (SL) 14-18 times that of the depth. P. doriae has a depth 16-21 times in SL. Compare this to P. oblonga (the most commonly seen black kuhli loach) which has a depth of only 7.2-7.7 in SL.

Hope this helps,

Emma
