Danio Kyathit in a hillstream tank?

Post by mikev » Sun Jul 23, 2006 1:47 pm

Is this a possibility?

(I'm looking at alternative dither options for the new hillstream tank...kyathit is one of the most attractive possibilities but I was unable to find a full profile. Accordingly to the fishbase page, they should be fine in a fast stream, but two questions remain:

1> What are the temp requirements? (I suspect that 72F (or the 70F-75F range) should be fine for them, but would like to confirm this)

2> Personality? --- any unpleasant surprises there? (I suspect not, but best to make sure). One option is to mix them with Gastros (who currently have no dither) so hopefully they are on the peaceful side.

I know that some of you know of them (there are very nice photos signed by Martin on the net), perhaps you have first hand experience/useful comments.

TIA

Absolutely ideal for River-Tanks Mike. In fact in the wild, they live at the foot of waterfalls. I had them in an unheated River-Tank for quite a while, then switched them to the Clown tank at around 82.5F.

At that temp, they have litterally "burned out" and have been crapping out one by one. it's like it just accelerated their ageing.

Thanks, Martin!

I'll try to get them then.

This btw is one of the tank mates

Among the gastros here there are five ridens, all likely of the same species (unlike your photos I have no variety among them). Hopefully they will get through the heatwave, because 82F is what I have in all tanks right now :( I'll be better organized for the next summer, but there is not much I can do in a rush now.

Kyathit are a great fish, mikev. I have a school in a tank mixed in with some danio choprae (another great river tank choice) with good current and they seem to love it. The temp is in the 75-78F range.

I've got 6 in my R/T - gorgeous fish, especially when their fin's start showing orange. The tanks got masses of flow and temp ranges from 22 - 28C.

Thanks all!

OK, I went ahead and bid on them (aquabid) and won. Does not mean yet that I'll be actually getting them -- the seller tends to have all kinds of problems every time I'm trying to buy from him. Presumably, these is how these guys look like:

Only five, but if I understand them correctly, they breed just like Zebras, so making a few more should be possible.

Since the seller also has Charpae I think I'll try to get a few of them (thanks, Jim, for mentioning the mixing possibility).
