Dojo loaches eat large snails?

Post by jenricae » Tue Feb 09, 2010 2:53 am

Do Dojo loaches eat large snails (apple, nerite)? are there any loaches that wouldn't eat these larger snails?

I would be leery of trusting Loaches with snails. Some Loaches are more aggressive snail predators than others, but they all have the ability to nip at exposed snail bodies every time the snail comes out to feed. Eventually the snail refuses to come out at all.

My Clown Loaches have eaten garden snails. (snails are about 1" diameter)

I have had Dojos who were not interested in snails, and others that are.

If you already have the fish, see if there are any snails in the tank. Pond snails are very common, especially if you have any plants. If smaller snails are safe, then larger snails are, too.
38 tanks, 2 ponds over 4000 liters of water to keep clean and fresh.

Happy fish keeping!
