A Guide to Identifying Eel Kuhli Loaches

Post by Kiophy » Fri Jan 19, 2024 6:02 am

I wanted to share my little kuhli loach identification project here on the forums.

This is specifically on the species pangio anguillaris (eel kuhli loach), pangio cf. anguillaris (brown eel loach) and pangio doriae (golden eel loach). I hope it helps people! Personally I have been frustrated due to buying these eel loach species under the wrong name (p. doriae among p. oblonga schools, p. doriae as p. anguillaris, p. anguillaris as p. doriae and p. cf. anguillaris as p. anguillaris) so I want to help shed light on these hard to identify loaches. Since I'm only a hobbyist, if I got any information wrong, please let me know! :D

Those are very nice comparisons of the non-striped pangios. You have great pics with good explanations of the differences from various sources. I've only kept p. semicincta & P. oblonga...so far ;)

This site used to link to the loach species index https://www.loaches.com/species-index for all loaches & https://www.loaches.com/species-index/p ... ne-loaches for pangios. & an article on breeding https://www.loaches.com/articles/breedi ... io-oblonga There was another breeding article or thread but a quick look didn't find it. Maybe within individual species profiles https://www.loaches.com/species-index/species-index

Thank you!

Interesting sites, I didn't know these existed. I had fry from pangio oblonga and found the mentioned breeding article before because of that! I will share the videos and details on these baby fries eventually. I also had infertile roe from p. oblonga later, which I pictured.

Pangio species has many suitable characteristics for project implementation. Your comments are really detailed. I'm starting to get interested in what you sharegeometry dash lite. The description is clearly illustrated and points out each structural feature. Please share more about this project in the near future.

Pay close attention to the color; P.fireboy and watergirl anguillaris will be more uniformly dark brown without the golden tint.

From what I have witnessed, anguillaris' color is the least uniform out of the three due to the pattern. But indeed the shine's tint is completely different.

What kuhli species that people would be interested in seeing compared? I would like to try to provide detailed information with other kuhli species as well.

I would say the P. doriae on this pics is P. bitaimac. P. doriae has a golden color and a small dark stripe through the caudal fin. P. bitaimac has a dark "blurred" blotch in the caudal fin and the body is darker colored. Both species has nasalbarbels.
