I'll third that. I did for a while put my name in one corner, but it annoyed me visually too much. I don't bother now because i know i can go into a picture and clone out most things, so why bother when others can do the same?

I could imagine that some would write a quick note, once the contact address would be visible (but not bother to look for it somewhere else, possibly not knowing where to start looking)

... in case of commercial use (like in case of Martins Clown-logo) that goes too far... Martins Logo has become part of this forum which has a world wide reputation... the unauthorised user is possibly not a member, but making money with it, there is something a court would listen to, ...not even mentioning the possible impact on the reputation of LOL (here we go: not everyone gets a Ferrari sold to.....

On the other side, one should also see how much pleasure the pic´s create to the LOL community => always look at the bright side of live... (eeehhhm... I gues Copyright applies here as well... credit goes to "Brian´s live"?!)

There are programs that do this. You can embed all sorts of information in a picture file but I don't think there is a simple way to access the info unless you have the right program.

I just opened a couple of pics on planetcatfish and was able to right click/download them. Maybe Julian gave up on it since it's so easy to get around.

Whats the big deal about sombody using a picture you've taken and posted up on the net?

The "Big Deal" Charlie is that it is just common decency to ask the originator of an image if you may use it in some way.

Is it ok for me to use your car because you park it on the street? No.

I have never refused someone who asks nicely because I think it is a great compliment that they wish to use my photo. However, I always ask that they attach a credit to me with the photo. Most decent people are more than willing to do that.

What we are talking about here is the extremely bad manners of taking an image without consulting the originator, using it for your own purpose, and giving no credit to the phtographer.

Further more when a commercial concern uses your image as a selling device, they are making profit out of the image with no benefit to the photographer.

We all take photos and post them for the world to see. Showing off a nice picture like that does not imply carte-blanche freedom for others to use it.
An on-screen photo is point, click, download, edit, upload, post. I can do it in a few minuites. Artwork takes a lot longer and is far more of a personal thing.
When someone uses my artwork as the sole logo, apart from their company name, on their website it becomes part of their company image and in some way enhances that image and indirectly benefits them. It doesn't benefit me though right?

When the image in question is already associated with another site, i.e. here, using that image is of even greater inexcusability because of possible consumer perception of an association with this site.

A perceived association works both ways and may or may not be beneficial depending on performance of either party. So there should be no chance of misinterpretation.

I did not realize just HOW important that Clown logo is to this site until I suggested retiring it a few weeks ago. Holy crappola! you should have heard the reactions from people! In fact, the reactions were so strong that we're now including an animated version of the Clown at the bottom of every page (virtually) of the new LOL site.

That just reinforces my desire to get this company to remove the artwork from their site. By the way, I've still received no reply back from them as yet. The last time I wrote (back in September) they reacted quite quickly.

Many people don't realize that to be able to view most things on the net, they have to be downloaded to your hard drive so the original file is usually somewhere on your computer if you know where to look

The stealing of the LOL Clown Loach logo I can understand. But taking your camera to your fish tanks and snapping pics of your loaches, posting them on the web, then see them elsewhere I don't understand.

Unless sombody is saying I took these pics, or these are my fish, then that'd also be different.

Not to mentiont most of the time there really isn't much most of us can do besides get mad, bitch and complain. We are all aware of the nature of the internet, and you'd think that if trivial crap like sombody else useing a picutre you worked oh so hard to push the button onyour camera and click the mouse a couple times, would make you mad then you wouldn't do it.

Just seems kind of pointless since there isn't much that can be done.

Some of us take a lot of time and effort to produce the pictures we show; to some it is considered an art form and is more complex than just 'pushing a button'. No-one has the right to use other people's work without gaining permission first.
