Im stuck!

Post by problemloaches » Wed Jan 03, 2007 2:42 pm

I have to admit, before i bought my weather loach i did not read up on him, however, what i have now read up is exactly how i kept him, although on his own, he did not seem bored or unloved because he was the only one. He was well fed, cleaned and well loved, but i do not know wether his death could of been related to not having another of his kind. He died in 2 days of me nothicing there was something wrong. My dad reccomended using methylene blue to help him, because i think he had a swimbladder problem. Are there any tips on keep any other weather loaches i may buy?

Thanks in advance,
Rik.

Sorry to hear this.

FWIW Meth Blue was not likely to help: it is primarily a disinfectant against external infections, like fungi (very effective), columnari (somewhat effective), ich (marginally effective).... Swim Bladder disease -- if this is what it was -- is an internal problem (bacterial OR viral infection OR parasitic infection OR something else), generally difficult to treat.

Further, Meth Blue can kill your biofilter, making problems much worse, and can be toxic too,... it is not the stuff you want to use in large doses unless you have a good reason to.

One of the causes of it is poor water quality, so per your question about tips: make sure that water is good at all times. And read the profile on weather loaches (Misgurnis ...) to make sure that the tank settings are right for the species. Since weather loaches refer to more than one species with somewhat different requirements, you should try to identify the species you have first.

How big is your tank, is the water stable and how many/ what kind of other fish are in there? Did you recently add any fish/ plants that could have brought disease in?
