white lines

This might sound silly. But, I have seen alot of loaches that has the white line in the black. You might see two loaches (clowns) one 8 inches with no white lines and the other 6 inches with white lines in the black. But the 6 inch one will be real tall and fetten up. Like as if he has been in the aquarium getting fed 3 or 4 times aday. And the 8 inch one is much shorter or thinner. (not wasting) because he is a wild caught and had to swim and hurt for his food. Could the white lines in the black be streach

Seriously though, I don't think they're stretch marks. There would be no logical reason IMO why the fish's skin would stretch only on the black areas. Some Clowns get a paler area in the centre of the black stripes. I have one that's slim(ish) and has a pale spot on the top of the caudal peduncle stripe. No logic for that. Older Clowns also get pale edges to the stripes in a lot of cases.

Notice the smaller ones in my tank DON'T have the line, but the big ones do I assume it's just growth....some get it, some don't.

I don't think they want all that to glow
All the fish are beautiful. But have you noticed the whiteline in the center of the black? Plus I think you are the one that showed pictures of the different colors of the fish from different areas. Some of mine are orange and black and kind of rosey color. And some are pale white and black. And the ones that are black and white stay that way. If anything they get lighter (graying out). The others the orange and black stay pretty much that rosey glow. Just a thought.Oh and buy the way Martin I have been looking at the pictures you drew. You are one hell of a artist. mamaschild yes like that. I like to see them fat like that. I know they are being fed well, and are happy. But I got one that was long about 6 inches and he was don't skinny but just round like a hotdog. I have been feeding him for around 3 months and he is starting to get girth. No string bean.

I was just talking to a guy that said he has had some 8 inch clowns and they are in with a knife fish about the same size. He feeds gold fish to the knife fish and says that the clowns will be setting there and a goldfish will be sitting by the clowns and then all of a sudden the clown will eat the live goldfish. Have any of you ever had your clowns eat any fish that were alive in your tanks? thanks jerry

We have several Clowns that have light bands within the black bands, and this is most predominant on our larger specimens. Many medium sized ones have the light area within the black bands along the dorsal surface, which Martin has already mentioned. If Coppermine was working I would include some photographs of my Clowns to illustrate this better, however I still can't access it today for some reason.

Jerry, I would take what you have heard about the Clowns + goldfish with a very large pinch of salt. We have kept and observed Clowns of this size and bigger for a long time, and they have never shown the slightest bit of interest in attacking other species (and they have been in with quite a range of different fish species of varying sizes over the years).

I've looked at a few hundred 2.5"-3" clowns between last September and now trying to find one with a double line. A total failure. At the same time I was observing one of my khulis morphing his pattern and it never occurred to me that the double line may be a pattern change later in life....

OK, the key question: did anyone ever observe how the change takes place? (I'm rather curious if this is the same thing as with khulis).

No, sorry Jerry, I haven't. All the Clowns we import are tank raised somewhere in the East. I've never imported wild-caught Clowns myself.

I used the word wild caught but I don't know if they are wild caught. They just weren't in a little aquarium for years to get the bulk.
