Its made with 1/2" tempered glass(reused sliding glass door). The moisture is not a problem. But you must keep heated tanks tightly covered or basements get humid,moldy,etc..mistergreen wrote:nice.. Are you using plexiglass for that?
How's the moisture in the basement?

It is just a 3/4" Plywood box with a hole in the front for viewing. The box is put together with 3 1/2" screws, painted with four coats of swimming pool paint(2 part epoxy),and glass mounted with a 2" wide silicone overlap. The most expensive part can be the glass.I"ve been using free glass with mine.If you price new glass you will see why used/free glass comes highly recomended.Rubix wrote:yes give us details, im interested in building my own tank in the not-so-near future, but i can plan now
Maintenance is easy! weekly I turn a few valves and backwash the bead filter until 1/3 of the water is gone, then I refill it and I'm done. I'll be taking photos of some of my other tanks too.loachmom wrote:
I hope you'll tell us more details, like how often you maintenance it and what that involves.
Also, I'd like to see your other tanks, too.
Crud, I missed it. The links to the tank pics are gone?

Well, I discovered why I couldn't see the pics. Seems they load fine in Explorer but not in Firefox.
Anyone else in this thread using Firefox? If so, I'd better check it out and see what's wrong with my version...

loachmom the 700 gallon tank was setup last December and the 350 gallon tank in early 2004.Also still in use are a 90 and 150 gallon I built about 20 years ago. I had 7 other tanks from 250-500 gallons that I sold when I moved house.Of all these only my first tank developed a leak(due to not enough coats of epoxy paint).loachmom wrote:That is so interesting, Oldfish.![]()
If I hadn't seen your pictures, I would never have believed one could make a fishtank out of reused glass, plywood, and pool paint.
How long has the one in the picture been set up?
Have you ever had any leaks or blow outs?
