It also raises the question to how many clowns in a large group will actually grow to be huge. Some clowns seem to max out at a much smaller size. This stunting happens for numerous reasons and it doesn't necessarily mean that they are unhealthy or won't live long lives either. Sometimes it may be due to being at the bottom of a hierarchy.

Another thing to define is what exactly mature is? There is a story of 6" clowns breeding in a planted 35 gallon tank in a book called the Hobbyist Guide to Catfish and Loaches. I'm fairly sure that one of my 6" female clowns has been releasing eggs also. Age or size doesn't really define what mature is.
