Shari, do you feel like a smaller sponge would be OK? Where did you get your sponge? They just don't seem to sell them around here and the one I was talking about in the above post is one I would be ordering off of ebay.

Yes, Martin, that is how I was planning on doing it. I was talking about the holes drilled in the pvc that the sponge would be slipped over.

I am certainly NOT the person to give you advice on setting up a river tank, or keeping hillstreams.

I got the whole tank, fish, decor, plants, light, powerhead and sponge from a former poster here. No fault of his, I lost all of the fish in an overzealous cleaning attempt following a power outage.

I re-stocked and lost all but one of the poor little new guys to ick and a subsequent bacterial infection. the tank is now (hopefully) clean again and the last remaining ctenocephalus has just been joined by a new group, which I hope will survive my tender ministrations...

So --- I'd wait to hear from some more experienced folk on the sponge issue. I just told you what size mine was because I have a 20 long tank, too.
books. gotta love em!

The question is, will this be the sole source of filtration? If you're using a HOB or something else this small sponge will be OK. It all depends on stocking and suchlike.

If you mentioned this before, sorry I forgot.

What was the source for the sponge? What was its original intention for use?

Martin.

Here is the sponge in question:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Black-Sponge-Filter ... dZViewItem

The way he said the dimensions is a little screwy but I think he means three inches instead of five since he also says 1/2" for the center hole and 7 1/2 cm for the diameter of the whole!

I have purchased some plants from the guy so I wouldn't have to pay the full shipping price if I had them shipped together. It would cost me $5 total.

Another option is this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/2-Nib-penguin-rever ... dZViewItem

It doesn't say the size on there, but I think it might be bigger than the one above. I'm not sure how much bigger, though. It would cost me $7.50 for the two of them.

It would be the only filtration on the tank to begin with. Right now I have just some floss over the intake, stuffed down into the tube. Stock is 6 whiteclouds. What I am thinking about ordering from Frank for this tank is three A. elongatus and four or five G. ocellatus. Probably. I am a little concerned with the fact that it is a new setup, no algae to speak of yet, and I'd be upping the bioload by quite a lot at once. The one idea I did have was to possibly take the whiteclouds out when I add the loaches, so there would be less stress on the bioload at once. I could put the whiteclouds into another tank temporarily as long as everything is healthy as it now looks to be.

I'm a little embarrassed to be blabbing on about this but I'm really excited about it and don't want to make a mess of things and I'm hoping you'll be able to spot any mistakes in my planning.

You might want to ask about the sponge. I've seen two different kinds..one is just a sponge with a core drilled completely through and one drilled just halfway though. Unless I'm missing my guess you would want the one only drilled partially.

I'm assuming you could cap the input tube so that wouldn't be a problem, but its just something to think about...

I'm in the planning stages for a river tank myself., so I'm going through alot fo thoughts in my journey as well.
