Forums moving servers in 2 days...

Post by shafer » Tue Jan 08, 2008 10:42 am

The forums and forum archives will be moving servers in 2 days or less. (An exact time is not set) The old server had too many other customers on it, or maybe the Loach Forum is just too popular and crowding them out. :D They say the move will only take 10 minutes, but let's plan on a little bit longer to be safe.

The old server was an ancient Athlon XP2100 with 1GB RAM, and the new server is a Core2 Duo E6600 with 4GB RAM. Hopefully it will be better. :)

Thanks,

Jeff

Will we need to avoid logging in for a period of time, so as not to lose any posts we make?
Everyone has a photographic memory, some have just run out of film.

Good question. It might be best just to compose your posts in notepad or word and paste them into the message box when you're finished. Then, if the site goes down for 10 minutes, you won't have lost anything.

phpbb3 will speed things up to and makes the database alot smaller in size!

this forum isn't slow IMO, but would be alot faster when on the new server i think.

Forum speed is primarily limited by the separate database server, rather than the host server running the PHP scripts. Whenever I get a lot of complaints about the speed, I go into the ISP's web interface and request a new database account on the newest and fastest DB server, which generally speeds things up for another year. (But, in all fairness, the host server was getting really bogged down in recent months, so hopefully moving will help with that)

I'm sure phpbb3 is great and all, but I'm not upgrading to version 3.0.0. Maybe when 3.0.2 comes out.

I don't know if it is self-suggestion but it does look faster than before. Well done Jeff!

It still shows "Invalid Session. Please resubmit the form." though...
