loach and spinach salad

Post by chefkeith » Mon Oct 27, 2008 6:28 pm

My clowns got some spinach for the 1st time ever. Some of them are really enjoying it. The others must still be full from the shrimp dinner they got a little earlier.

Beautiful fish 8)

I gave my lot some spinach before, they took advantage, shredded it to bits, continued to mouth and play with the floaties and ended up clogging the filters  needless to say they havn't had it since but they sure did love it!

Thanks all.
I didn't blanch them. I just put them on the skewer. They are still feasting on it, but most of it's gone now.

It really is satisfying to see them enjoy "real" food. Spinach is the hands-down favorite in my tanks.

Nice fat loaches enjoying healthy food! How on earth do you keep your sand so clean??

The mechanical aspect of the island in the river tank keeps the sand clean. The island is placed in the middle of the tank so that water flows in a continuous loop around it. The top layer of sand slowly gets turned over and moves around the island also because the water flow is so uniform.

Also most of the detritus gets sucked into a water bridge and goes into another tank. The sand in that other tank can get quite dirty. I'll have to clean that tank about once per month. I rarely have to clean the river tank though.

Great pictures! I'm surprised you haven't tried spinach before. I've seen your videos with shrimp and chicken. It looks like the shrimp is pre-cooked. Is it? I'd like to try this!

I buy whatever shrimp is on sale. Cooked or raw, the clowns love it.

Thanks again everyone.
