Digging Aborichthys video

Hi,

last night i could filmed my Aborichthys while digging under a stone. I never known of a loach that take a small portion of sand in its mouth and bring it away like some gobys (rhinogobius)

Not the best quality, and the Cobitis are sometimes in the way but you can see him spitting

Great video. It made me miss the one I've been keeping for 4 years - was such a cool fellow.
Mine also did carry big stones out of the hole with his mouth piece by piece, and sand was spit out like you show very well in your video.

Sometimes he hesitated, and it appeared as if he spitted on other fish on purpose.

He was playing with the Y.Caudupuncata. He approached them and they would chase him... a most entertaining loach.

The coloration was a bit different than yours, perhaps yours is female?

If been looking for them since, but never found any.

Many loaches sand sift , This is for food . Do you have a reason to belive more? Is the hole defended?

I noticed the black edges on the video. Is this because you covered the rest of the tank, minus the lens of the camera?

In Thomas's video you can see both, the sifting for food at the end of the video on the left - which is performed by the other loach. And the sandspitting from the Aborichthys in this video (spiting from right to left)for purpose of transporting material out of his nest he is building.

Additionally Aborichthys are very effective at building their house, they kind of pump out the sand with some kind of very fast "serpentine-peristaltic" movements and force their entire body into the ground like an extra turbo heavy duty power drill. Its impresssive how sand and gravel is thrown out in a fountain that way, as if a very powerful pump would be applied.

The "fine tune" in it's construction process is accomplished by taking mouthfuls out of the nest, either stone by stone or "sandblast".

Any tank construction must be fixed well, once something stands on sand (or even gravel) it may be burrowed underneath and fall...

I just love those fascinating guys- mine was always busy bioulding something, what an energy bundle it was.

I have read of your Aborichthys at the AiD-Forum. Aborichthys are cool and funny loaches. I hope to get them someday again. Wish you also luck for finding them.

The coloration was a bit different than yours, perhaps yours is female?

I have a pic of another Aborichthys. It was bigger (the biggest of the four 6-7cm) and had a little different coloration.

I used a Macroconverter lens. It made the round edges, but the quality is better than without it. if I could use the zoom they were gone, but unfortunately it becomes very blurry

Very nice looking specimen, I love the "leopard pattern".

If I find some, I´ll ask for the importer and let you know, if not we need to travel to Emma's ...
