can't find Kuhlis anywhere

Post by nycloacher » Sun Jan 04, 2009 9:17 pm

Hello Everyone
I haven't seen any Kuhlis in any of my LFSs in the downtown Manhattan NYC area for a couple years. Is there a scarcity of this species. Does anyone know? Has any NYC Loachers seen any around or could help me get some?

They seem to be seasonal around here. (West Coast)
38 tanks, 2 ponds over 4000 liters of water to keep clean and fresh.

Happy fish keeping!

Thanks Diana; yeah, I know better than to look in LFSs during the summer so I'm keeping my eyes open this winter and coming spring.

In the last few years it seems that for some reason the mortality rates during shipping for kuhlis has risen dramatically. Many shops are no longer ordering them because they got fed up with losing so many fish.

This has created a definite availability shortage compared to years ago. When you can find them they are often small and skinny looking. I even bought some superb looking specimens a year or so ago and ended up losing all of them

Kuhlis that settle in ok will live for years and are easy to keep. It just seems to be more of a gamble than it used to be in the initial stages.

Martin.

Franks has a few in stock, but isn't shipping right now because of the cold.

Yeah, I bought a few 'bout two years ago and they all died soon after introducing them into my tank. Guy at LFS said exactly what you report, "haven't had much luck with the Kuhlis lately". I'll keep trying

Thanks for the info.
