hi all
it's really difficult to judge just by pictures.
the ones I have now show that "breviventralis" could really be breviventralis. I'm trying to find out if the second species I got is diardi.
www.siamensis.org shows diardi="spotted"!
speciosa (as on the vietnamese website cited) is not "spotted"! never! unless j.freyhof is totally wrong with the picture published. the description of roberts on fishbase fits with the picture of speciosa I have. looks a little like b.kweichowensis with a row of 6 big dorsal spots.
the map and the picture of albisurea come from the species description by j.freyhof.
anything clear?

hi graeme
as a trader said: we can't wait until somebody decided about an name. the fish are there an have to be sold.
see ga. "punctulatus", ps. "marble", b."leveretti" (I've never seen one) and now ps. "fangi" for ps. sp (may be myersi) and ps fasciatus. inventive but nonsense. but they make a move when customers know more than themselves or if you breed them! guess if they like you for that!?

hi all
as promised some pictures of the new sewellias.
it's seem there are two different species on sale as "breviventralis".
type 1 type 2
type 1
type 1+2
this one should be type 1
of course there is still the possibility of variations within the same species. the differences are in pattern and form of the head.
type 1 could be elongata from vietnam. it fit's with the picture in DATZ 05/2005, jörg freyhof e.g the dorsal saddle-like big spots, form of the head. the laos variation is dark even black, the rest of the description by Roberts (systematic revision of the balitorid loach genus sewellia of vietnam and laos, the Raffles bulletin of zoology, 1998, download as pfd) does hardly compare.
rest's breviventralis of which I have only one picture: similar pattern, shorter head, and diardi. this one shows a very compact body, but there have been some pieces collected resembling elongata. even roberts couldn't decide if new species or variaton.
both can't be albisurea, lineolata, marmorata, patella, pterolineata, speciosa
one last thing: on the vietnamese site sewellia "spotted" is declared as speciosa - with a picture by emma turner. comparing spotted with the description of roberts that's wrong.
so we have to wait for further news from the specialists.
cheers

hi graeme
would be great
hi farid
quicker than a flash! seem to have been taken just after I left?!
ok just give a little more light with your powermachine
I'm convinced by now they are all elongata and the second type above is breviventralis. take a bet? just until j.freyhof is back!

hi all
the identification of type 1 has been made
sewellia sp "breviventralis" has been identified as sewellia elongata
that's the result after having a very good look at the imported specimen; mailed by J. Freyhof.
the question is still what type 2 is; as JF has none of this kind and I have no means to examine my specimen scientifically, the question is still open.
at the moment it's a new species not known to JF. I'll send some material to check.
cheers charles
