Too much pump?

Post by Pilze » Wed Mar 31, 2010 12:06 pm

I'm thinking about adding a Reeflo Snapper Hybrid to my 300gal tall clown loach tank. It will be pumping 4.5' from the bottom my cabinet to a 1.5" return line. According to manufacturer specs the pump is good for about 1850gph at 4' head. Is this too much? I can always throttle it down with a ball valve. My goal is to pick an external pump that will last and that I can use on my next monster tank. In the future, could I connect this pump to a manifold that feeds under gravel jets?

1850gph isn't too much in a tank that size. I'm running a koralia that pumps 1050 gph and my fish are by no means over whelmed by it and thats in a 90g 4' tank.

I used a 1200gph in my 55/75 gallon tanks, and now use a 3250gph and the 1200gph for my 180g; clowns, yoyos, kubs, darios, SAEs all love the flow.

My 300 gallon tank has four pumps that each pump 3500 gph and I would call that minimal flow.

Ditto the other comments. About 10 times the tank volume per hour is a minimum for most Loaches, and my river tanks are closer to 20x.
38 tanks, 2 ponds over 4000 liters of water to keep clean and fresh.

Happy fish keeping!
