Botia berdmorei

Post by marisseas » Sat Apr 02, 2011 6:29 pm

I want some of these guys to go into a 125 planted tank. It already has a few kuhlis, angels, a pair of whiptails, and a pair of farowellas. I was thinking five or six? I can move out some species if needed into a 55 that is empty if need be. Suggestions?

Are you talking about Syncrossus Berdmorei?

This guy was moved out of the botia classification but is often still advertised as a botia.

This is a somewhat aggressive species. I have 10 of them in a 125 gallon with 4 Syncrossus hymenophysa, some Arulius barbs and some big BN Plecos.

I haven't kept mine with any of the species you've mentioned but for what it's worth I would not advise keeping them with Kuhlis or Angels. The farowellas may be ok, my BN plecos do well, but keep an eye on it. If your fish are passive the loaches will chase them out of their territory they may fin nip and harrass peaceful species. You'll want fast moving fish who are comfortable swimming in the mid to upper areas of the tank. Even then I've had some barbs who have been beat up by my Syncrossus loaches. You'll want lots of hiding places and visual barriers to divide up these territories.

This is a great article on Syncrossus loaches

And a great post on a setup that keeps this kind of loach and other aggressive species.
