Golden Loach

Post by leifwhite » Tue Aug 16, 2011 11:18 pm

I have a 40 gallon tank with 5 cardinals, 2 flying foxes and a fallowala. I bought 2 golden loaches to deal with a snail problem. I put them in the tank 1 day ago. Today I have 2 dead flying foxes (4"long fish), my cardinals are at the surface of the water, something they never did, and my fallowala keeps getting covered in snails, something else that never happened. Any ideas?

How long was the tank established before you added the golden loaches? The farlowela might be dead. If it isn't, move it to a quarantine tank to keep the snails off it.

It is always improtant to add new fish to a quarantine tank to make sure you don't introduce diseases.

Please answer the questions already posted. That will people on here to help you.

The tank has been around for 3 years, the flying foxes were about 2 years old and in perfect health. 0 ammonia, PH 6.8, and 0 nitrites. Falwalla is not dead. The other thing that is odd is the snail use to mate with just two. Now there is these clumps of 4-6 at a time. Heater is fine.

When a fish is at the surface of the water, that usually means that the oxygen level in the water is low...

Decrease in water movement?
Increase in temperature?
Any new medications added?

Maybe on the O2 issue. The water movement has not changed, the temp has not changed. However the plants, of which are the bulk of my O2 supply (it's a plant tank) have been decimated by the snails lack the folage they had. I guess it's possilbe the loaches were just the "oxygen dependant straw" that broke the camels back. The only counter point is before the loaches the fish were real active and never at the surface. When you put everything that has gone on it seems like the loaches stirred up the snails into some hyperactive state and tha is where the O2 went. There were hunderds of snail.
