Loaches from China
I was lucky enough to have time to go 'fishing' during my last mission in Hubei Province, Central China. And amongst others I found 2 loach type fish. I think the first one is Cobitis chinensis, but I have no clue about the other one. Can anybody help? Thanks!
This fish I have not been able to find:
In this picture you can see them from above, they are the ones on the left

Absolutely stunning. Than you for sharing.
Re: Loaches from China
Hi,
Chinensis is neither a valid species nor a synonym in the genus Cobitis. The main thing is they are very nice!
The second one has two dorsal fins, so it isn't a loach. It's a goby, but I've no idea about the genus.
Cheers,
Thomas

Hi Biulu , are there also a couple of cyprinids in that overhead pic ?
Re: Loaches from China
Hi Thomas, I spelled the name of the Cobitis wrong; it should be C. sinensis....
Some people have suggested to me that the second one it is a Rhinogobius, so not a loach but effectively a goby type.

Re: Loaches from China
Yes, Piggy. Actually it is a fish that gets up to 10 cms long and is a local delicacy. I have a better picture of it here. Nobody has been able to identify this one either, so if you can help, that would be great!piggy4 wrote:Hi Biulu , are there also a couple of cyprinids in that overhead pic ?
Re: Loaches from China
Hi Biulu , by no means certain but possibly Leuciscus sp/ or maybe a Squalidus sp/ ?
Re: Loaches from China
Definitively not leuciscus as their bodies are too deep and the fish too big. These fish reach 10 cm max. Squalidus is more likely, but I have not been able to find a picture that matches this fish.
