Best filter for kuhlis

Post by FishyLady » Tue Apr 24, 2012 3:41 pm

Hi,
I am thinking of keeping some kuhli loaches in a 20 gallon long. I usually use internal Fluval filters but I'm worried they might go into the water outlet against the current, is this likely? I would like to use the Fluval so should I cover the outlet to be sure!!

For a 20 gallon long, I would use an AquaClear50 to provide extra filtration. I would also add an extra filter sponge, cut a small hole in it and place it around the intake for the filter so no loaches make their way into the filtration system.

+1 to the above.

AquaClear 50 for a 20 gallon tank. You can cut an extra AquaClear sponge as described above to fit over the filter intake to protect the kuhlis, or you can buy the Fluval prefilter (Finer black sponge) that will fit over just fine right out of the box.

Just be sure to rinse the sponge in tank water often to keep it from clogging up.

If I use an Aquaclear would I need a power head as well to make some 'current'?

I don't use a power-head in my 20gallon. I find that a bubbler and the AquaClear 50 work fine together. My kuhlis are quite happy.

No, you won't need a power head. The AC 50 will be all you'll need!

Kuhlis do seem to love bubblers! I don't use one because I inject CO2 into my tank and that pretty much defeats the purpose, but if you don't, then definitely try putting an airstone or even a bubble wand in! They'll love it!

Looks like you can order it from Petco.com... They ship to the UK through a service called iShipUSA or something like that.

Here's the link to the item at Petco.

Does Amazon ship to the UK?

They usually have the best prices there, but if they ship internationally, I'm not sure what it would end up coming out to.

Thank you so much for your help, if I am going to use an external filter it would be more convenient for me if it stood on a separate table so I think I will look at the Fluval external range here in the UK, but thank you again.

In that case, you may want to use a small powerhead or a bubbler to create some kind of water movement for the Kuhlis.
