Panda kuhli loaches

Here are a few pictures of the new 'Panda' kuhli loaches that came in on Tuesday evening.....

I know the pics need a bit of cleaning up, but I've got quite a lot on at the moment, and I know a couple of people who are very keen to see what these chaps look like - so I put them on anyway.

They are probably 2" TL and are very active, not too shy and are foraging about for food a lot of the time.

More new species to come later!

Emma, check out a page on the Braz Walker book. The old picture of a Pangio java. I wonder where he found that little dude from.

Something in my head says Pangio pangia. Never the less. They are lovely.

Do you mean the pic by Dr Axelrod on page 33? Those are dead ringers for these Panda's. He has them listed as being P. javanicus. Yet when you read the species description on page 18, the author doesn't mention the bars across the eyes - he just says the head is a uniform colour. Graeme, do you still have that excellent paper on Pangios? You sent me it a while back but it's still stuck somewhere on my old computer. I was wondering if there was anything useful for us in there, and also if you could send it to me again? You've probably seen that I've asked for help on an ID over on petfrd too, so we'll see what heppens.

Yeah it's the location that really means most. Especially with the old picture suggesting P. javanicus.

I can also try asking the supplier if they can contact the collector to find out roughly where he caught them from. I'm not promising they'll get me an answer, but it's worth a try.

Pangio javanicus (P. oblonga), is listed on fishbase as being entirely plain in colour. Although we all know fishbase can be wrong.

I had a look in the old Freshwater Fish of Western Borneo book, but there seems to be nothing helpful there except an awful preserved specimen which is no help whatsoever.

The Pangio pdf would seem to suggest what was described as Acanthophthalmus boorneensis (Boulenger, 1894) from the Baram River, Sarawak.

Seems that others think it's a variety of Pangio shelfordi though.

A lot of questions i agree. Pangio borneensis is said to be 'in question' which basically means they don't know, or have not enough funds to further look into it.
