Filter Media for my loaches

I am currently looking into getting a canister filter (350 gph) and was wondering if anyone has any tips for media combos to put in it. It will be the only source of chemical filration but I will have some sponge filters hooked up in my tank. I have a couple small plants in my tank and plan to add some more in the future, not a lot though. I currently have about 70 cm of fish in my tank (55 gal) and plan to stock some more in the future. Just wanted to get some advice about media, specifically what kind of biological filtration I should look into.
