I can’t believe the nearly complete healing of the silver dollar. Giving kudos to us both! Always out and about as if nothing happened. Really happy.

The remaining and only teensy hangs out with the big guys so I’m going to let things be with that. Three is not ideal but they all look good and the teensy has grown more. I compare it to the largest oldest cherry barb female I have and they’re nearly the same size now.

Last water change I did was the 31st though I check parameters between wc. Interestingly, the TDS was up a couple points from last reading (144 to 146) and nitrate was at 10. Feedings have been regular. So I don’t know what’s going on but I like it. The KH is down to 1.5 so I will add a teaspoon of baking soda.

One other little thing. One of the teachers had a goldfish living in a mason jar. He brought it to school, and I looked at the gills and they were very red, because number one it’s living in non-dechlorinated water and two, it lives in its own ammonia although he says he did change the water every day. So to make a long story short I brought in a 10 gallon tank with filter and everything. I checked the water parameters of the tap at school, and don’t you think the KH is perfect between three and four! It figures!

That’s the latest! :-)

Well done Fran. It is a great achievement to have these fish at 10 years of age still going strong, testament to your dedication to them and hard work.

The silver dollar has totally healed. I can't believe it myself either :D

Wow, Fran! Your silver dollar looks almost as good as new! Congrats on your good care & your fish's amazing healing powers. It sounds like your water params are under very good control now, keep it up!

On the goldfish rescue, I don't know...Maybe find him a home in a nice pond nearby? With permission of course. As you know a 10g isn't it's "forever home" but better than it's had, good luck.

Hey Fran.

How's you and the fish doing. I am so used of coming back and checking out the news here that the lack of updates...should be a good thing I hope

All the best to you. No need to answer :)

Hi Loach.

Everything has been really good. Status quo. Clowns look great. I love the stupid yo-yos and they are doing wonderful. The little teensy is doing great, you can tell he’s growing. And the silver dollars are fabulou—all four of them—back out and about and doing all the behavior they all used to do. The one that healed you can’t even see where there was ever a gaping hole. I don’t know how I got so lucky, but I am really happy I did. Thanks for checking in because I really appreciate it very much. Hope all is well with your guys too!

Hey Fran,

I am so happy for you.
No, you did not get lucky. There's no luck in these things. It's your dedication and excellent care and attention to the fish that pays off back to you.

All the best to you and the good looking fishes.

P.S.No changes with my clowns, all good thankfully, and the rest of the fish in the pond.

I've taken on an extremely sick discus from my local shop but chances of recovery are very low. I mean this fish looks a horror story. I had never seen a fish so sick unless dead. It looks like a black crisp. It's emaciated to the point of being as wide as a sheet of paper, but still breathing. So I am busy trying to save him but at the same time questioning myself if I am doing the right thing.

WOW, I would love to keep up with the discus. You never know! A little tender loving care could mean the world. Depends how far gone it is and it seems he’s really far gone. But....ya never know.

Thank you, Loach. :-)

Any difference today? How’s he doing?

No, no difference at all. I've actually had him for a week already. He's gone through a de-worming treatment. His poop turned normal. He's eating a bit but with a very poor appetite. Besides that there's little improvement in appearance.

I don't even know its real color... He was black in the shop and has not improved at hom. I noticed him in the shop a week before I brought him home. I said if he was alive by the end of my working week I'd take him, so that's what I did last Friday.

I decided yesterday to up the temperature up to try to purge out any parasites left. Discus can withstand high temps so he's now in about 33.5C temperature. I'll keep that up for 5 days then bring it back down and give him a break. He's in a very poor state, probably has been for months so I am not expecting fast improvements but on another hand he may never improve and just go downhill one day. I am trying what I can and what I think may help. He's on daily water changes too.

Wow!! Why is he black? I’ve never heard of that. Is it ammonia burn, is it lack of oxygen? I’m sure you’re trying to feed some frozen blood worms or brine shrimp? Yes deworming is what I thought you would be doing because he is so thin. I’m sure you have pictures but I don’t think I want to see them unless he gets better. This is really sad. People say oh it’s just a fish, but it still a life! Thank you for the updates. I am really interested.

He's black because he's probably been sick for a long time and in severe stress. From what I gather discus have dark pigment and can turn dark/black when very sick. I am not sure how it all started. I didn't gather much info from the shop besides that they said they got him about 3 weeks ago and he was already sick when they got him. They tried a couple of medications but it didn't work for him.

My guess is that he's been sick for months. He's way too thin for that to happen over the course of only 3 weeks. I think its a combination of parasites, worms, poor water quality, etc..Hard to tell, it's only a guess. I don't think you've seen a discus in such a poor state. I hadn't personally. Even if someone did cause such a thing to their fish, they'd not post it online...He's a living corpse, and a fighter...to stay alive
