Do I have TB from my fish??? YIKES>>>scared here!

Hello everyone. I have been without a computer for weeks so I have missed the forum. I hope everyone and their fishies are doing well. All is well since the loss of all my clown babies except for a breakout of TB in my guppy tank...the fry just kept coming and I let the water quality slip and boom.

I have lost a lot of the fish but it is under control now. Me on the other hand am not ok. I am scared to death that I have contracted this from the tank. I have a horrible red, terribly itchy and pretty painful rash on the inside of my right arm...the arm I use to clean the tank.

Is there a chance that I have contracted it? If so what do I do? I am freaking out. Any input is appreciated.

I wouldn't like to speculate Kris, but read this and certainly take it up with your family doctor. Might be worth printing up the linked info and letting him read it. It looks very informative as regards diagnosis and following treatment.

Definitely get it tested. Go see a doctor and make sure he tests for the appropriate stuff.

I did some research on this a few weeks ago... to see if my cat could have been affected. It is commonly referred to as `fishkeeper`s disease`. Google it in quotes and it returns a lot. I think it is possible to get this if you are working in an affected tank with a cut or scratch.

I keep rainbow fish which are believed to be carriers. I think I have it in the threadfin tank - a few losses from bent spines.

On the goldfish forum there is one member that had one of her fish tested and confirmed mycobacteria. I believe she uses full length gloves when she cleans the affected tank.

I sure hope its not fish tb and that its just a coincidence!!!!! It makes me nervous too.

My fish had that before and I continue treating them without any protective gears. I don't remember having cuts or scratches in my arms but I always wash with soap after tank maintenance.

Thanks Shari and I hope you are doing well. I am going to wait till tomorrow and then if it continues to get worse I am going to the Dr. I hate to say this but it really looks it might be...seeing that the fish definantly are affected with TB.

Thanks, after I posted I went back and read yours. Is your kitty ok...mine drink out of the toilet, so I know what you mean.

I pray this is not what is on my arm, but seeing that the fish are definantly effected with TB it very well could be. It is really scary!

You'd definitely want to see the doctor asap. The freshwater strain isn't as bad as the marine strain... You don't want to see the picts.

It'll clear with antibiotics. I got a rash a few months ago from sticking my arms in the aquarium too much. It wasn't tb.

Yes, the females all have or had sunken bellies and bent spines. They have been listless and laying on the botton of the tank. The fry loss has been huge with many of the larger fry having curved spines as well. It's odd though...all but one of the females have the symptoms described above, however the one surviving adult male has a huge horrible ulcer on his back but no spine deformity.

I am totally convinced that this is TB. This is why I am so scared about this now large red area on my arm.

To my surprise the fish have bounced back and I think they are going to make it. Treating with nitroflourizone but coming up on day 10 and want to continue to treat but I think I should switch to another med but not sure which one.

Let me know your thoughts when you get a chance.

I actually would like to see the pics but I searched and searched last night and couldn't come up with a pic. It is now not a rash it's a large red (very sore) area. I will be honest, I am freaking here!

Please do not be scared. There are many types of bacteria in an aquarium, and you can easily get a rash that is uncomfortable but not serious.
