The beautiful music project
Since this is the internet ("I think I just downloaded to my internet!"), I'm going to propose we do this with visuals. Not all of my favourite music comes with easy access to video, but some does. I encourage you to watch these links all the way to the end. If it strikes you as rewarding, I further encourage you to go to a record store *gasp* and buy *Mein Gott!* an album containing the song in question.
I'm aiming for obscurity here. I have a feeling this thread will develop into pop pap, but I'm interested in responses.
Louis Jordan, Caldonia
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xB-7tE07qms
EDIT: removed
Woody Herman, Sister Sadie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbjK9TZ3vnQ
EDIT: Like a lot of these videos, if you plug your headphones into the computer, rather than speakers, you tend to get better fidelity. This one is apparently from a TV broadcast, but the depth is there.
Louis Prima (and Keely Smith), Just a Gigalo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8K1InOOLEsQ
EDIT: Also from a TV broadcast, the sound is very good. If you ever see an LP of Louis Prima and Keely Smith, grab it. Sell it on to someone with an actual turntable. They did several albums of pure magic. Plus she always wears those weird revealing 1950s outfits. Crazy.
from Quebec, Jean Leloup, 1990
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAappAsGBO0
EDIT: Now of course Jean Leloup is a total and complete prat in this video. Who wants to see him in bed? The lurid juvenile sexual overtones make this video even stranger and less palatable. However, the dancing skeleton should have its own TV channel. I'd watch non-stop.
Desmond Dekker, The Israelites
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZlFz9yZ1Fs
EDIT: removed
The Selector, On My Radio - CORRECTED
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-xxTAJBuMs

Watch these last three! Great stuff.

a police car and a screaming siren
pneumatic drill and ripped up concrete
a baby wailing and a stray dog howling
the screech of brakes and lamplights blinking
thats entertainment
a smash of glass and the rumble of boots
an electric train and a ripped up phone booth
paint splattered walls and the cry of a tom cat
lights going out and a kick in the balls
thats entertainment
days of speed and slow time mondays
pissing down with rain on a boring wednesday
watching the news and not eating your tea
a freezing cold flat with damp on the walls
thats entertainment
waking up at 6 a.m on a cool warm morning
opening the window and breathing in petrol
an amateur band rehearsing in a nearby yard
watching the telly and thinking 'bout your holidays
thats entertainment
waking up from bad dreams and smoking cigarettes
cuddling a warm girl and smelling stale perfume
a hot summers day and sticky black tarmac
feeding ducks in the park and wishing you were far away
thats entertainment
two lovers kissing at the scream of midnight
two lovers missing the tranquility of solitude
getting a cab and travelling on buses
reading the grafitti about slashed seat affairs
thats entertainment

SPANISH:
De Alto Cedro voy para Marcan
Llego a Cueto, voy para Mayar
El cario que te tengo
No te lo puedo negar
Se me sale la babita
Yo no lo puedo evitar
Cuando Juanica y Chan Chan
En el mar cernan arena
Como sacuda el jibe
A Chan Chan le daba pena
Limpia el camino de paja
Que yo me quiero sentar
En aqul tronco que veo
Y as no puedo llegar
De alto Cedro voy para Marcan
Lleg a Cueto voy para Mayar
ENGLISH:
From Alto Cedro, I go to Marcan
I arrive in CUeto, and then I go towards Mayar.
The love I have for you
is something I cannot deny
I drool all over
I cannot help it.
When Juanica and Chan Chan
sifted sand at the beach
...
Chan Chan felt sorry/shame
Clean the path of straw
cause I want to sit down
on that tree trunk I see
and that way I'm never going to arrive
From Alto Cedro, I go to Marcan
I arrive in CUeto, and then I go towards Mayar.

When my kids were much younger (the oldest was 16 or 17) I bought a Louis Prima CD. I love it! My kids first thought I was some sort of weirdo. But it grew on them. Angelina in the Pizzeria etc. They took it to camp and it was a smash hit with the little kids.
....so there..... I blow raspberries....
I've also got Hoagy Carmichael. I love 'Small Fry'.

Louis and Keely singing Old Black Magic is total gold. I've got about five or six of his albums, some with her either as co-release or her just doing back ups. They were both amazing performers.
Louis Jordan is another one - I have a ton of music, but the video pickings seem to be a bit slim.
