Does anyone by chance know if female Stiphodon are being imported to the US? I can only find males, but I am very interested in trying to breed stiphodon through replicating the stream to sea to stream life cycle.
I have 4 male Stiphodon I believe to be Semoni, they seem to be getting pretty territorial. Has anyone experienced problems with male-male aggresion?
Tyrano, have you had any difficulties with keeping only male Stiphodon?

I recognize that the fight between males of the Stiphodon genus does not have any problem.
The dorsal fin crumbles by fighting each other, but is recovered immediately.
If the order of their strength and weakness is settled, their fights will decrease.
Male's fight is a natural action for them, and it is possible to see in the natural stream.

I think that it's the pleasure in keeping Stiphodon genus to be able to observe alga grazing, courtship behavior, male's fight and color change.

Thanks Odyssey and once again beautiful pictures! I know you mentioned earlier in the thread that some stiphodon species will absolutely only eat algae while others will try other foods occasionally. I can't remember if you had this already but I saw my stiphodon semoni slurping up some frozen blood worms. I tried to get a picture with the worm in his mouth, but he hid!
When one stiphodon male sits on top of another male does this show dominance?

There is not conviction what a word your "dominance" means.
A lot of kinds of the gobioid are the habits that the male brings up the egg.
Even if goby's male makes the harem like mammal's male, the male cannot bring up two or more female eggs.
It is no use of making the harem though they struggle and fight over the partner female.

I was able to have met a lot of Stiphodon in the river in islands of Okinawa in Japan last December.
Okinawa is the subtropics climate in islands in the south end of Japan.
Many fish have been carried from the tropics by the Kuroshio Current.

Hi, everyone!
I have traveled to Cairns in Australia and have visited at several rivers this month.
I was able to see an objective fish class in a certain beautiful river.

The following are scenes of the river which I visited.





I'm convinced that these are a male of Stiphodon atratus.







I think these are a female of Stiphodon atratus.









When I investigated a pictures thoroughly later I found a slightly different individual in females.
This female black bar spreads and does a burr more.
It is known that Stiphodon semoni also inhabit in this area.
Such patterned feature is corresponding to the female of Stiphodon semoni.
Though I was not able to find a male of S.semoni, this female may be S.semoni.




Fortunately I was able to see Stiphodon rutilaureus, too.










Below is the other fish which live in this river. I'm not conversant with a rainbow fish, so I don't know name of a species.

Amazing work. Is this your job? Must be a lot of fun doing this.
As said before, wonderful photos and comments. I also loved seeing the snowmonkeys and the shinkansen and the views and ofcourse the fish. Hope to visit Japan some day.

While a male of S.atratus was courting a female, its body became black and its face became blue.
However, its color has faded away immediately.

The male appearance of S.rutilaureus is totally different from S.atratus.
It is easy to distinguish both.

In fact the male of S.ornatus resembles S.atratus very much.
It may be difficult to distinguish both by the information except the habitation area.

A3.
Unfortunately I do not yet have a good picture of stiphodon imperiorientis.
Google images site has a lot of splendid photographs of S. imperiorientis.
