C. pygmaeus fry question (updated for ID help)

Post by loachmom » Fri Jan 29, 2010 2:04 pm

Hello everyone!

About a month ago I set up a ten gallon with a sponge filter and moved my 6 C. pygmaeus into it. I was hoping (again!) to get them to spawn. I never noticed any spawning activity. Then I noticed that my albino cories were gravid, so I moved them into the tank also for a few days. They spawned within days, and I moved them out of the tank to keep them from eating their eggs.
Of course, the eggs hatched, and I have many many little cories all over the tank.
Then, this past Monday,as a last ditch effort, I changed 1/3 of the tank's water with fresh rain water (since we had so much of it  )

Yesterday, while my daughter was looking at the tank, she noticed a little black and white striped fry moving in and out of the gravel. Then she noticed another. I saw one of them today, too!
:)

My question is: Are Corydoras pygmaeus fry striped as soon as they hatch, or do they develop the stripes later? There seem to be some other very tiny white fry in the tank. These are smaller than the other albino fry. I'm just wondering if they are just extra small albinos or newly hatched pygmaeus.

Thanks so much for the help. :)

Thanks Charles and Mick.

I appreciate the link. That's what my fry look like now.

So, are the fry born with the stripes? I read on another forum that the fry 'develop' the stripes as they mature. Just wondering...

Mick, those fry sure are tiny---much tinier than the C. aeneus fry that are also in the tank with them.

Here's a somewhat blurry pic of one of the fry. Tiny little thing, but very active.
I've spent way too much time in front of their tank today trying to see them. I'm not sure how many we have, but it's more than three. :)

Thanks Val :)

And thanks for the info, Charles. :) These little fry sure can disappear into the gravel. I wonder how many are down there...

Hi,
The little C. pygmaeus fry are growing nicely. I think there are three of them.
Here's an updated pic. Sorry for the blurriness.

Also, I have another question. When I started up the ten gallon, I also put in my only two C. habrosus which I think are a male and a female. And when I added the C. aeneus, some were albino and one was the greyish/brown type. When the babies hatched, I noticed that some were not quite white, but were somewhat tan. Now the tan ones are changing into this:

Do you think they are aeneus or habrosus or pygmaeus? Thanks :)

Thanks so much, Mick! :) I'm glad to here from an expert.

Those stripes at the eyes had me thinking that maybe they were something else. Hopefully the habrosus will spawn someday. Thanks again for the quick answer.
