Lava Rock

Post by tmcmullen » Thu Apr 08, 2010 3:37 pm

I saw this awesome decor in a LPS. It looks like it's made of lava rock - it's a deep red color and it has two holes for the fish to swim through. I really want this decoration for my tank, but I'm concerned that the rock may be too rough for the clowns and yoyos. Any opinions?

I've seen people use it, but i wouldn't. Too rough as you mentioned. You'll likely get differing opinions.

My gut is telling me it's a bad idea, but it really is a neat looking rock!

Lava rock can be quit an attractive decoration in tanks with smaller, free-swimming fish. With fish like Botia that have ultra fine scales and just LOVE to squeeze into tight spots it would be a huge liability IMO and likely cause scratches that could become infected and cause greater problems.
Botiids need smooth rockwork and stuff like bogwood or caves made from slate to hide under. Flowerpots or PVC pipes to hide in.

Think of it like this. Would you snuggle up to a rough concrete wall naked?

Martin.

Martin, I love the analogy you used. I will simply admire the rock behind the glass of my lps. :)

Thanks!

I always think that putting things in human terms gets the point across
