why did you say alone of course? male fighters can be put with other fish expect males of their own kind though they often become the victim of fin nippers.
i have a male and female fighter in one of my community tanks and also have a pair in a huge vase with a peace lilly sitting on top as they eat the roots of lillies.

Absolutely gorgeous, and I bet he knows it.
At my fish club one of the ladies imports Bettas, and I have never seen such amazing fish as the ones she imports.
The most amazing one I ever owned was slate grey. His entire body and fins. He was super elegant and actually shimmered a little purple/pink. Incredible.

I have 1 just like him, and he is 1 of my best ones. mine love to rest on the soft leaves of my silk plants.
