I tried to replicate a real hillstream, in which there are no plants. Even if I put in plants, the only plants I would put in are needle leaf java fern and petite anubias. At the moment I have a needle leaf java fern in the tank, which looks good. I will get some anubias for it one day. The anubias that where in the tank got so overwhelmed by BBA, so I nuked the with bleach, killing off the BBA but then sadly killing the plant too.

I know this is an old post, but if you're still around- how did the danios do? I got some "Fire Ring" Danios to put in my hillstream tank, but after watching them in their QT tank I thought they weren't strong enough swimmers so I didn't put them in. I'm curious to know how yours have fared.

The post isn't that old... I have 6 left, sadly. They are pro jumpers. All of them jumped out from time to time. They do okay in the current. Doesn't seem as if they are struggling. They do keep to calmer areas though. But they do okay. If I turn off the 3000lph wavemaker then they'll do even better. What is your flow rate and turnover? I think that the "Fire ring" are in fact Danio kyathit, same as I have.

Nice tank and beautiful pics! The danio's looks to me like the Tinwini's, but i could be wrong.. .

They look like kyathit to me. Tinwinni are similar in appearance but are much smaller and dont have color on the fins.

Yes, the "Fire Rings" seem to be an aquarium bred strain of kyathit. And mine are crazy jumpers too. I have a 20 Long with two Maxi-jet 600's for 370gph. This is far less flow than you have but there really are no 'calmer' areas. I'm going to try them and see how they do.

Tank update

Everything looks like its coming along nicely and the fish look very healthy.
How do you keep such a nice growth of algae in that tank?

Thank you Jim. To be honest, I don't know. The algae has come in stages. Firs light dust algae, then hair, then BBA, and now this proper green algae. My lights are on for very long (more than 10 hours) and I dose NPK even if there's only moss, and no CO2.

Confirmed 2 living, +- 13mm P.cheni/meyersi fry.
