Clams / Freshwater mussels

Post by jonstfrancis » Wed Dec 26, 2012 8:42 pm

Just wondering if anyone has any knowledge of keeping clams in aquaria?
I've noticed that a shop near me are selling "yellow clams" but have also noticed that there are "blue" and "pink" ones for sale on the internet too.
Well, I've an interest in putting a couple in an aquarium.

From what I have heard they are not much of a pet. Mostly hide under the substrate, then die.
When they die they can make the whole tank toxic if you do not remove them right away.
Somewhere I read they could be kept in shallower substrate, so you do not lose track of them. Then, when they die you can remove them before the smell gets too bad without having to tear down the tank.
38 tanks, 2 ponds over 4000 liters of water to keep clean and fresh.

Happy fish keeping!
