ich.... just found my loachs had it
Moderator: LoachForumModerators
well all 3 loachs that are left now swim around enjoying themselves all day. I see maybe one spot on one of them so I think the treatments working.
Swordtails arent showing signs of rubbing today.
Ive been doing the half dose for scaleless fish but might bump it up a little as long as loachs dont show signs of problems because Im starting to believe the fish are all getting over the ich.
Then I need to move onto the fry tank that is my quarentine that now has ich.
Though it was probably from when I moved the fry I found in the big tank to the quarentine. I would guess that since that fry could live and be born in the tank with the treatment in it then it should be fine to be treated at roughly the same dose (full strength).
Thanks.

Im treating frys and still the large tank.
Large tank is almost clear I think.
Loachs still rubbing but only a spot on each so thats not terrible
Ive been doing the "scaleless fish dose" but since rubbings getting worse Im taking it up a half dose to set it right between full and scaleless (half).
all and all loachs are becoming very active now.
They claimed the tiki hut then a swordtail decided they wanted to join the fun so the all relocated to the barrel. Which is now their base of operations
They are swimming around and playing with each other and fish most of the day so Im sure they are feeling a bit better..... 100% improvement over how they were acting. They were hiding all day and night unless it was feeding time.

Smudgeman, I just went through this myself. The trick is to keep treating until all of the spots are gone plus an additional three days at least. Better yet four or five. Then slowly notch down the temps to the regular levels, go back to using carbon in the filter, and lower the salt content with water changes.
I've found that the Mardel Maracide seems to work best for me - your mileage may vary. I used full doses every 48-hours (per the label) for three treatments. It didn't upset any of the fish - a large Pleco, some Clowns, some Glow lights, and some Hatchet fish. In addition, I bumped the temp to 88F and used a full tablespoon of aquarium salt per 5G added over the space of four days.
At some point, the thermostat stuck and temps soared to 92F; caught it before it killed anything 'cept the plants.
But the good news is that the chemistry is getting back to normal. I actually measured 5ppm of nitrate today (it's been zero for weeks) and can see a bit of algae growing again so I'll be stocking some live plants later this week.
Good luck! Remember: sudden changes are bad. Everything goes in increments. I didn't add all that salt at once and I'm not taking all out at once. A degree a day up or down.

Tim
well heres an update......
all loaches died
they got really bad with ich like treatment didnt work and the last 2 passes within 24hrs of each other....
still treating tank but no one shows signs of rubbing or spots.
switched tank to commercial grade sand and will look at getting new loaches from the private fish shop in a few weeks when Im positive treatments all been removed.
problem Im having with the sand is vaccing doesnt work well since some poo would stay and sand around it would suck up.
going to try going extreme with quarantine approach..
-when I purchase fish their plastic bag will go in a paperbag to minimize stress
-get home and with low lights will do a drip into a bucket with the fish and empty the water a few times in process to ensure no store water kept
-net into quarantine tank with lights off for the rest of the day.
-quarantine for 7-14days to make sure nothing is wrong
-introduce to main tank
then I was thinking about putting salt in the tank in a small dose as a preventative for ich.
just dont want to introduce the loaches to a tank full of salt already.
but swordtails, mollies, betta and pleco all are doing well with no signs of ich. the swordstails and mollies even had fry.... and they are all doing well.
Tanks still cycled.

sorry to hear of your loss , especially after how hard you tried to save them, total bummer. I haven't been on the forum for a while and just read through your ordeal as it was happening.
It's obvious you tried your best.
one thing I do know is that it sounds like you care alot about your fish and any new additions you may get in future would be lucky to be in your care.
hang in there ,
