Flatuant Dojos? (Serious question!)

Post by JWhipple » Sat Nov 17, 2007 3:47 pm

Right off the bat this sounds like a stupid teenager's question to the teacher during Sex Ed, but it's not! I hope this question does not offend anyone!

My dojos like to swim up to the top of the tank every so often. When they do this, the instant they hit the surface with their face, I see them expel air from their anal area.

IS THIS NORMAL?

HA HA HA HA...

Seriously, I just read an article about this a few days ago.. let me see if I can locate it.. if I cannot, I will summarize it by saying yes it is normal. Sometimes they will be sitting on the bottom of the tank and their back end floats up, then you see some bubbles.. LOL!!

Let me go see if I can find that article for you..

Yes, this is normal. Have a look through this article, where the 'wind problem' is mentioned under 'Adaptations': http://www.loaches.com/articles/weather-report

Ok this is not the article I was referring to, but this website also mentions it:

I'm sorry I couldn't find the other article. And yes I do see mine doing it occasionally.

Yeah, my dojos do that and they still do it in the nice pond I found for them. I hope they breed there.

It was very entertaining to see some of my guests laugh themselves close to death when they saw the fish pop a fart.

Then my girlfriend called them siamese farting fish. That was near-fatal as well.

have fun, those fish are great.

Would you be able to provide us with a few more details such as water parameters (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH), size of tank, water temp, filtration, how often and how much water do you change etc. Also did you quarantine your new additions before adding them to the main tank?

I had dojos when I was that stupid teenager, and I used to laugh myself silly watching them pass gas (along with all of their other antics).
