Aquarim Salt and Loaches?

Post by Diane C » Tue Jun 09, 2009 9:43 pm

I was just wondering if DoJo's should have aquarium salt added to the tank? I also have platties and guppies and 3 frogs. A lady mentioned that I should be adding aquarium salt to my freshwater tank, but I asked her if it would hurt my dojos or frogs and she did not know. Should the salt be something that I should add?

Thank you...

Diane

I agree. I can't imagine salt being good for Dojos or frogs.

Maybe as a treatment if nothing else works.

It is a bit of a myth that freshwater fish need salt, however, it does benefit livebearers like Platies and Guppies.

What type of frogs do you have? Dwarf frogs do okay, but if you have the large African frogs they can and usually do eat the rest of the fish.

Dojos will get 6-9" Make sure your tank is big enough for them and has a good lid. Mine will poke their head out of water and go over lips. And don't expect any of the babies to survive unless you put them in a hatcher with a lid. The Dojos as well as the adults will hoover them up unless it is a super well planted tank.

I don't want to give you a bad impression of the Dojos though. They are one of my very favorite fish. They also like cooler water. I hope I haven't given you too much information. I am not an expert, but I know Chefkeith is correct about the salt.

Platies and Dojos are both cool water fish, Guppies can handle a rather wide range of temperatures.

Guppies and Platies will handle salt; the best guppy I had was in a brackish water tank.
But, no salt for Loaches.
38 tanks, 2 ponds over 4000 liters of water to keep clean and fresh.

Happy fish keeping!
