They look like mold or like small midew sopts that are either on their snout and belly. I change my water 30% weekly... currently i have the 8 clowns 5 ottos and out of place small gold severum (moving shortly). Any replys would be great! Thanks!

Hi fishaddict, welcome to Loaches.
Have a look at this post and the links. It is kinda old, I hope some of the pics are still there. Is this what is going on?

Thanks Diana for the reply. So it either can be caused by the carbon, decors in the tank, substrate, tap water quality, or inadequate water changes :?: Or is it mostlikely inadequate water changes :?:

See how several possibilities come up?

If you are using activated carbon, then be sure to rinse it really well so there are not tiny pieced to drift free in the tank.

Monitor the tank conditions with a nitrate test, and do enough water changes, frequency and volume to keep the nitrate well under 20 ppm. Lower is better. When you are doing water changes you are also removing a lot of things that do not show up on a test, such as fish hormones, all sorts of organic matter even microscopic stuff that is in the water and can affect the fish.

Keep an eye on the black areas. Sometimes they will sort of hang around a while even after conditions have improved.

That is one of the benefits of forums like this: The same problems seem to crop up, so a few references to older posts can at least provide a starting point for helping with a 'new' problem.

I read various discussions about dark spots on loaches. Is it typical or an infection? Any contemplations?
