A flattering shot of one skunk

I like these loaches. I added three, on Nonn's advice, to my two. Heavy business in the loach tank. I've added some more shelters, but now I disrupt the intended planting.... Urgh. Once more I must upgrade to a larger tank and again promise myself to get rid of the tanks the upgrade replaces.

Mark, that is an excellent shot. I love the color and the composition is good. To bad he wasn't looking towards the camera. It is clear, well lit and the color balance is perfect.
Do yourself a favor and bump up the aperture a couple stops. If the flash has the power, shooting at f11 will give you more depth of filed and be more forgiving. At 5.6, you can see the DOF is not quite deep enough to get the entire fish in focus.
Keep it up,
JD

I'd say the opposite.JD wrote:

Shoot it wide open to blow out the background better (make it even more out of focus) and therefore making the skunk "pop".
I love the look of skunks.
Too bad they are so nippy.
drain your pool!
While I agree, that would be a good look, it will be even more important that he nails the focus on the eyes. With a moving target like them, it is exceedingly difficult to focus where you want, and more often you get it somewhere else:) Aesthetically I agree completely, practically, it will yield very few keepers. But hey it's digital, shoot away. Also, with the lens I suspect he has, he's already wide open at 5.6.
That is a good shot though, and a nice fish. I agree, it sucks they are so nippy, or I would have had them years ago too.

I was fiddling with the depth of field - man this camera is fun. You can see though how closing down the aperture gets specific. The pectoral fins and part of the fish's side are perfect. Too bad he flinched! It's a pretty long exposure even with the flash.

ya sorry I was thinking 2.8 kinda thingJD wrote: Aesthetically I agree completely, practically, it will yield very few keepers. But hey it's digital, shoot away.

Focus is a PITA.
I am still not sure what gets me a larger "take" of sharp keepers.
My AF is very good but with such a shallow DOF and low light it is difficult at the best of times.
I do like that shot too!
drain your pool!
